How to Attach a Headboard to a Wooden Bed Frame

Looking for a handyman to help you attach a headboard to a wooden bed frame? Don’t do it before you read this. If you still find it hard and think you can’t manage, then it’s okay to get professional help. So, let’s try and save you some bucks.

How to Attach a Headboard to a Wooden Bed Frame

Headboards were invented to prevent the sleepers’ heads from getting cold during winter nights. The houses today are cold-resistant, unlike the houses in the old days. Now, headboards have a more decorative purpose. In addition, there is a variety of headboards with built-in bookshelves and nightstands. Such headboards find a practical use for storage along with an attractive display.

P.S. If you’re looking for an expansive collection of wooden beds Apex, look no further and head straight on to woodyfurniturestores.com.

How to attach a headboard to a wooden bed frame depends mainly on the type of headboard. Let us break down the process by each type.

1. Freestanding Headboards

The free-standing headboards are by far the easiest choice for a headboard. This is because they do not need to be attached to anything. They just stand freely between the bed frame and the wall. It is easy to move them around when a new layout mood strikes.

However, you can also attach them to your wooden bed frame or the wall if you wish to.

2. Wall-mounted Headboards

Such headboards are compatible with all types of bed frames. This is because they are attached to the wall. You will need to drill holes into the wall and attach it at a desirable height.

A wall-mounted headboard gives you the freedom to choose the position of the headboard concerning the bed frame. You can choose to position it high or low, whatever suits your style preference.

3. Bedframe Mounted Headboard

The headboards that are attached to the bed frame bring a cohesive look to your bedroom. There are different kinds of headboards and bed frames. But today we are specifically addressing how to attach a headboard to a wooden bed frame. Other types also follow almost the same method.

It is quite easy to mount a headboard to a wooden bed frame. Because it is easy to drill into wood.

What You Will Need

  • Screws
  • M6 and M8 Bolts
  • Small and Big Washers
  • 4mm and 5mm Allen keys
  • Wrench
  • Nuts
  • Headboard mounts

It is a two-person job. So you will need someone to help you. The following is a step-wise guide on how to attach a headboard to a wooden bed frame.

Step:1

Place the headboard upside down on a smooth surface. We recommend placing it on a clean and soft carpet/rug to prevent scratches.

Step:2

Attach the legs to the headboard. Secure the legs in place using bigger bolts and washers. You will need a 5mm Allen key to secure these.

Step: 3

Place the assembled bed frame with the front side facing the bed frame.

Step: 4

Position the modification plate (also known as Modi Plate) to determine which slots on the Modi plate line up with the headboard and the headboard brackets on the bed frame.

Step: 5

Attach the headboard in place using the smaller bolts and washers. You will need the 4mm Allen key for this.

Safety Instructions:

  • If your headboard comes with an assembly instructions manual, read them carefully.
  • Failure to follow warnings can result in serious injuries and even death.
  • Inspect all parts for damage before assembly.
  • Do not begin to assemble before making sure there is no part missing. And all the parts are intact. (I.e. not damaged)
  • Check washers and bolts periodically to see if they need tightening.
  • Keep the manual safe for future reference.

How To Attach A Headboard To A Platform Bed Frame

You can follow the same steps as mentioned above to attach a headboard to a platform bed or a divan bed. The only additional step will be to drill holes in the bed frame. Position the headboard against the platform bed and mark the points to coincide with the holes on the headboard. Then mount the headboard using screws and washers. Secure the screws with bolts.

If you do not want to drill holes in your bed frame, consider buying a free-standing headboard or mounting your headboard to the wall.

Check The Dimensions Of Your Headboard

Now that you know how to attach a headboard to a bed frame, you can go ahead and get the one you have been eyeing. But there’s one thing you will want to consider before making the purchase. Headboards come in different sizes just like the bed frames. So, if you are going to buy a separate headboard, you will need the dimensions of your bed frame.

With a wall-mounted or free-standing headboard, you have the margin to go slightly bigger than the bed frame. But never smaller!

However, the headboard that is attached to the bed frame needs to be the right size. Otherwise, firstly it will not fit. Secondly, if you somehow make it work, it will look out of place.

Here are some common bed frame dimensions, so you can compare them with the dimensions of the headboard.

  • A single bed frame measures about 38 x 75 inches.
  • A double bed frame typically measures about 54 x 75 inches.
  • The Queen size bed frame measures about 60 x 80 inches.
  • The most popular bed frame choice; that is the King size has dimensions of 76 x 80 inches.
  • And typical dimensions for a Californian King size bed frame are 72 x 84 inches.

The variety of headboards is great. So, if you know how to attach a headboard to a bed frame, you can create a personalized stylish bed all by yourself.
