How to Mix and Match Wood Furniture In the Bedroom

When you’re looking at pictures on Instagram and Pinterest, observe that the modern bedrooms showcase a skillful mix of wood furniture. You might have seen furniture sets that feel like photocopied in some catalogs. However, modern interior designers would advise against that. Identical finishes of wooden furniture in a room make it look monotonous and bulky.

The good news is that it is not rocket science. Plus, if you check out our selection of wooden beds Apex, you can also find the nightstands and dressers that complement it. That way you save yourself from buying a bedroom set that has pieces of identical finishes. If you already have a few pieces and looking to complete the set, then we can help you do it the right way.

HOW TO MIX AND MATCH WOOD FURNITURE IN THE BEDROOM

Mixing wood furniture isn’t intuitive. You need skills to do it. That doesn’t mean you need to take a course in interior design. Follow these tips and you’re good.

1. Keep a Sample for Reference

When you go shopping furniture shopping, you should keep a sample with you. So, you can match the finish of your pieces. You can get the wood samples from the place you bought your furniture. Alternatively, you can take pictures to compare the color and finish of the pieces.

2. Sisters, not Twins

The rule of the game is that you don’t want to end up with identical pieces. So, look for complementary finishes instead of close ones. Most DIY interior designers go for the close similarity between the wooden furniture. You shouldn’t go down that road. Otherwise, there’s no point in buying individual pieces. Since keeping it close will give you a matchy-matchy bedroom set.

3. Undertones can Help

Undertone can be defined as the color temperature of wooden furniture. If you’re new at this, undertones can help a great deal. You can mix undertones of the furniture pieces as an easy way out. Warm undertones have a yellow, orange, or red cast. Cool undertones appear greyish. While neutral undertones look more beige. Neutral undertones go well with either warm or cool ones.

4. Common Element

The easiest way to mix and match wood furniture in a bedroom is to keep a common element. Although your bed, nightstands, and dressers shouldn’t be identical. However, having an element in common will give your bedroom a cohesive look. For example, furniture pieces can have a common style, shape, or undertone. Don’t go overboard with common elements. Otherwise, you will end up with a matchy-matchy bedroom. On the other hand, don’t try to bring two extreme juxtapositions together. Moderation is key.

5. Choose a Unifying Bed

The bed is the central furniture piece in your bedroom. Therefore, it is a good choice for unifying all the pieces together. Choose a bed that shares elements with nightstands and dressers. This way you can visually tie everything up. Having that said, you can choose the dresser to act as the unifying piece too. It depends on your preference. As long as you achieve the desired cohesive look, anything that serves the purpose will do.

6. Scatter Similar Pieces

It is a good idea to keep the nightstands more contrasting to the bed and the dresser more alike. If you choose the same finishes for the furniture that is placed close to each other, your bedroom will look lopsided and unbalanced. This is also important because you want to adjust the contrast when trying to mix and match wood furniture in the bedroom. You don’t want to put all the dark pieces on one side of the bedroom.

P.S. If you’re new to this keep the contrast between the furniture pieces subtle.

7. Soften the Transition with Bedding

Mixing and matching wood furniture in your bedroom doesn’t mean that you need to stick to the difference in everything. Use bedding, curtains, or area rug to soften the transition of colors and tones throughout your bedroom. For example, if your hardwood flooring has a cool undertone and your bed has a warm one, you can make the difference less jarring with a colorful area rug that features both. Similarly, the contrast with the nightstands can be softened with bedding.

8. Avoid “Too Much Wood”

Believe me or not, it is possible to have too much wood in your bedroom. No matter how good you are at mixing the finish of your bedroom furniture. But don’t worry it’s an easy fix. Add other textures and materials to the bedroom decor. Plus, you can always choose lacquered or painted pieces to cut through the “woody” look. This is because painted surfaces hide the grain of the wood. Dressers with mirrors are also a clever way to introduce a different surface.

You have done it right if the final look of your bedroom embodies relaxation and serenity. Your bedroom is your personal space so feel free to design it your way. The only rule is that it should be able to calm you down at the end of the day.

TRY BEFORE YOU BUY:

The easiest way to visualize everything in your bedroom before you make the purchase is to use our Room Planner. It gives you an idea of whether your choices give a cohesive look when put together. Also, if your bedroom looks overcrowded with all the pieces you have chosen. The Room Planner can also help you decide what size of bed or dresser goes well with the dimensions of your bedroom.

When you are happy with the final look, you can go ahead and start shopping. It can save you a lot of time and energy that is better used for decorating the bedroom. Don’t snooze just yet. Stop reading and start planning the layout of your bedroom.
