Dining Room 101: Bring on the Food, Friends, and Family

Even if you live a fast-paced life or your family dynamic has changed, the dining room should not be neglected. Its purpose is still valuable even in this new age of technology and distraction. A Harvard Edcast titled “The Benefit of Family Dinner“, family therapist Anne Fishel highlighted the wonders of what food and good company can do for individuals, whether with family or close friends.

There have been more than 20 years of dozens of studies that document that family dinners are great for the body, the physical health, the brains and academic performance, and the spirit or the mental health, and in terms nutrition, cardiovascular health is better in teens…

Then the mental health benefits are just incredible. Regular family dinners are associated with lower rates of depression, and anxiety, and substance abuse, and eating disorders, and tobacco use, and early teenage pregnancy, and higher rates of resilience and higher self esteem.

…when kids are given the choice, or when they’re asked in a survey, would you rather eat with your parents than by yourself in front of a screen or with your peers? 80% choose their families. It’s because teens know that it’s the most reliable time of the day to have time with their parents, and adolescents still need that and want that.

We could all use a little more connection and joy in our lives. If that can be easily achieved by simply having a great place to eat and chat, the dining room sounds like a great place to invest.

Regardless of where you live or when meal times happen, you can create the perfect dining room. The goal is to make this room a place you want to be in. Then, you’ll find every excuse to make time for those sit-down dinners. We’ll explore the options that can help you achieve that perfect space in an easy and affordable way.

Make the most of the space you have

You have a dining room, so use it! Even if it’s a small space or built into your kitchen, don’t neglect this area of your home. There are ways to work with your current space to make it inviting and worthy of a traditional sit-down meal.

Multi-functional furniture

In today’s innovative world, we have plenty of furniture options that provide convenience in our tiny spaces.

  • Tables and benches with storage compartments
  • Sideboards/Hutches with folding bars/tables
  • Extendable tables
  • Dual countertop/bar tables

These options may also prove to be cost-effective for those on a tighter budget.

Branch out your table and seating options

Not every table has to be rectangular, and you don’t have to use individual stationary chairs. Explore the round, oval, square, and pedestal options available. Consider benches for an appealing visual that offers more seating.

You don’t have to choose the trending styles. Whatever fits your space will look the best.

Budget considerations

You can elevate your kitchen, whether you have the proper savings or a limited budget. Sometimes, the smallest changes have a great impact, and a complete remodel/redecorating session isn’t always necessary.

If your furniture works for you, don’t stress about buying the latest and greatest replacement. Find small, creative ways to add depth and personalization to your dining room that pull you in. Maybe that can be through artwork, centerpieces, unique dining ware, or simply letting in more natural light.

If you have a specific style in mind, take note of the average costs of those layouts and furniture pieces. Find ways to eliminate unnecessary costs by letting go of non-essential items on your list. You should also consider selling your current furniture to give you extra cash for a new purchase.

DIY is not for everyone but is an effective way to save money. Plus, you’ll be proud of your dining room because you know you worked hard for it. While we don’t recommend doing a complete DIY unless you’ve had previous experience, some easy ways to give your dining room a facelift while on a budget are:

  • Repaint your walls/trim
  • Repurpose existing/thrifted furniture

An attractive dining room on a budget requires time and patience, but the result is worth it. You won’t be able to enjoy an expensive dining room setup if it puts you into debt, so focus on what’s most important: A clean space with a table and chairs.

Here’s how to find the perfect table

To get the ideal dining table, you need to examine these things:

  • What colors will your walls, floors, trim, and decor be?
  • The number of regular occupants
  • Frequency of hosting guests/guest count
  • Space limitations/shape of your dining room
  • What will offer a comfortable walking/seating arrangement?

Your goal should be to make your dining table the center of attention. This is achieved in an open space with similar materials and complementary colors. Avoid crowding a table with too many chairs or insufficient space for guest traffic. If you don’t need a large table for more than a handful of occasions each year, consider getting an extendable table with leaf attachments.

Eating at your perfect dining table should be a comfortable and refreshing experience. Small rooms may not be able to hold much furniture, but if you have the ideal table and chairs, you don’t need much more.

Complement your table with quality chairs

You can find dining sets with matching chairs, but if you’re not in the market to purchase a new dining table, there are ways to match new chairs to your existing setup.

Search for a specific style

Try to identify the style category your table falls into. If it has lovely claw feet or ornate legs, look for traditional-style chairs. Rustic and farmhouse-style tables pair well with natural vintage-style chairs and benches. Keep the elements of your table in mind and try to match or complement those details.

Color match stains and paints

Most furniture stores and manufacturers offer color-matching services to match your chairs to the original color of your table. Whether buying new or trying to find a match on your own, your best bet is to bring a spare table leaf and compare that piece in person with the colors available. Most pictures on phones and computers are inaccurate and should not be relied on for color matching.

When in doubt, use upholstered options

The best way to hide differences between your table and chairs is by being purposeful in them. Beautiful upholstery in a complementary color can easily divert the attention of your guests from the mix and match nature of your dining room.

Accessories that elevate the dining room

The rest is up to you once you have the essentials, a table/bar, and chairs. A dining room is a beautiful blank canvas. It can be as simple or ornate as you want (but you want to be sure it’s not too crowded so it stays inviting and comfortable). These accessories and additional furniture can elevate your dining room if you have the proper space and budget:

  • Hutches
  • Buffet cabinets
  • Wine shelf/ liquor cabinet
  • Display case
  • Chandelier
  • Wall Shelves
  • Statement Art
  • Centerpieces
  • Rugs

While optional, each of these elements provides a tasteful way of filling empty space and breathing life into your dining room.

The best materials and basic care practices for dining room furniture

The most readily available and high-quality option for dining room furniture is solid hardwood. It’s easy to clean, it can be made as luxurious or rustic as you want, and wood is easy to pair with various colors and materials. Wood dining furniture also comes in every style imaginable: modern, Scandinavian, minimalist, farmhouse, industrial, mission, shaker, traditional, and more!

People’s main concerns about wood furniture are scratching and chipping. The good news is that there are easy methods to prevent and treat these damages. The first step is to purchase furniture made of durable hardwood species, like walnut or hard maple, avoiding soft woods like pine.

Use coasters, trivets, and table cloths/mats to keep moisture, heat, rigid plastics, and metals from directly contacting your tabletop. Keep your tables dusted and avoid exposing them to direct sunlight, humidifiers, or heaters for long periods to prevent changes in the wood. To clean your table, we recommend using a gentle soap and a non-abrasive cloth, followed by a soft cloth to dry the spots you’ve cleaned.

Projected and recent trends in dining room furniture

According to the Decorilla 2025 dining room trends list, the rising furniture trends feature:

  • Blending the old with the new (mix and match, elevated classics, modern-vintage fusion)
  • Natural wood finishes
  • Expandable or modular tables
  • Luxurious upholstery
  • Multi-functional furniture
  • Bold colors and patterns
  • Ergonomic, comfortable, and uniquely shaped designs

Why are these things trending?

The eclectic use of patterns, colors, materials, and styles shows that the current trends encourage homeowners to highlight their personalities in their dining rooms. The goal is to promote comfortable expression. Your dining room should not feel stiff or sterile. It should feel natural and free.

A dining room is a place for memories and connection. Pick the old things that invoke nostalgia and pair them with the modern innovations that inspire you. There is always a way to integrate your favorite palettes and materials, invitingly and attractively. Your dining room is meant to reflect you and what makes dining an enjoyable experience.

Conclusion

Creating the perfect dining room is about adapting to your needs, budget, space, and personality. Investing in dining room furniture made of quality materials like solid hardwood is worthwhile. These purchases give you long-lasting and beautiful dining rooms, no matter where you live.

Take time selecting furniture and designing your dining room because the results will be worth waiting.
