The shape of a dining table is very important in creating a comfortable and stylish space. Small dining rooms! I’m looking at you. There are so many things to consider in a small dining room that relates to the shape of the dining table. To name a few: How many diners can the dining table accommodate comfortably, and what impact the shape has as compared to the shape of the room and the footprint of the dining table?
WHAT SHAPE DINING TABLE IS THE BEST FOR SMALL DINING ROOMS
We recommend a curved shape of the dining table for smaller spaces. However, a rectangular or square shape is not a “wrong choice” either. It all comes down to how comfortably the dining table sits in the space. Also, how easy it is to move around it. For example, if you are going for a breakfast bar or a café style dining area; rectangular dining tables are a good choice.
Whether you go for a circular or oval shape. No one can deny that the best conversations happen over a meal. Curved tables literally “cut the corners” so they promote sociability as all the diners are facing each other. More importantly, curved tables save much-needed floor space too.
The following points are the justification for our choice of the shape of dining table for small dining rooms.
• Less Visual Space
Rounded corners of a circular or oval dining table take up less visual space. Smaller dining rooms can use such an advantage. We recommend a circular table with extendable leaves instead of a large round dining table. This is because the larger circumference of the table can make the diners feel distant. On the other hand, a round table when extended becomes an oval and the sociable atmosphere remains unaltered.
P.S. Our collection of wooden dining tables at Apex features sturdy and affordable dining tables that last a long time.
• Smaller footprint
Most round dining tables have a single pedestal for support. They do not occupy a large area on the floor. The absence of four legs makes it easier to tuck the dining chairs completely under the table, when not in use. This allows free movement around the table especially in the tight walkways. With dining chairs neatly tucked in, the footprint of a round dining table is smaller as compared to a square or rectangular table. Central support for a round dining table also allows more legroom for the diners.
• Universal Shape
A rule of thumb is that the shape of the dining table should match the shape of the dining room. However, if you’re thinking of what shape dining table is best for a smaller dining room, you may be stumped on the choice. A round dining table goes well with every shape of the dining room. It is highly unlikely that your dining room is circular. (Unless you have a dome-shaped conservatory.) Whether you have a small dining room, or just assign a cozy nook in the kitchen to be the dining room, a round dining table fits all shapes.
• Number of Diners
Any dining table is not used at its full capacity all the time. A round dining table looks like an intentional choice for as little as two diners and up to six. (Depending on the size of the dining table) Again, it is a more sociable shape as everyone is facing everyone else at the dining table.
• Safe for Kids
Since a curved dining table does not have edges, it is a safe option for a household with kids. In a smaller dining room, it is safe for adults as well. If there is less room for movement in the room, there is a lesser chance of getting hurt if you bump into the table. Thanks to no edges!
Every picture has two sides. We have given you the reasons for our choice of a curved dining table for a smaller dining room. However, we wouldn’t keep the downsides of a round dining table from you either.
• Not a Good Choice for a Dining Bench
Unless you choose to have a built-in bench that’s L-shaped or goes around the table, a dining bench won’t work with a round dining table. It may look out of place even with an oval table. If you can’t part ways with a dining bench, a round dining table is not a good option.
• Size
Like with any dining table, you need to measure your space properly for a round dining table. It can be too big or too small for your dining room. Remember to leave enough space for the dining chairs when they’re pulled out.
• Less Space to Serve Dishes
With a round dining table, there is less space in the middle to place serving dishes. However, there is an easy fix. You can create a buffet on a sideboard or serve one dish at a time.
Regardless of the size, a dining room is a place where we catch up and share stories with our friends and family over meals. Naturally, we want it to be an inviting and sociable place. Therefore, it is important to know what shape of dining table is the best for smaller dining rooms.
